E-cycling 101

Knowing how to recycle E-waste can be confusing and overwhelming. What do I recycle? Where do I take it? Is it free? What is it going to cost me? What are the facility hours?

I find many people don’t know how to recycle E-waste properly or even know why they should. Recycling harmful E-waste keeps it out of the landfill. The components salvaged by E-recyclers are reused to make new electronics, which takes less energy than mining new raw materials.

Let’s take a moment to think about what to do with our old electronics, laptops, cables, microwaves, and more.

I know it can be tempting to toss that old phone, digital clock, or TV in the trash. But don’t do it. There are all kinds of easy ways to sell, donate, and recycle used electronics.

  • For tech gadgets, check out Gazelle or an ecoATM kiosk near you to make a few bucks.

  • If your personal devices are not worth anything, drop them in the E-waste collection box at the front of your favorite home store like Target or Walmart.

  • Don’t forget about the Goodwill E-cycling Program that ensures non-working computer equipment and electronics are responsibly recycled.

  • And my personal favorite, take a trunk full of electronics (and other household hazardous waste) to the Dane County Clean Sweep and only pay a minimal fee.
