Easy ways to eco-organize your home

Outfitting your home with all new organizing bins, drawer dividers, and baskets can be expensive. Before spending a pile of money, hop on over to Pinterest for some inspiration or reinvent some of these common household items:

  • Shoe boxes are the perfect size and shape for stashing small gardening tools, holding a nail polish collection, storing special cards, and more.

  • Oatmeal boxes, coffee cans, and tall potato chip containers can hold anything tall and lean, from kitchen tools to markers and paintbrushes.

  • Boxes that checks come in are great for organizing office supplies such as pens, rubber bands, batteries, and more.

  • Mint tins and gum containers can hold small items like push pins and paper clips. They also are great for jewelry when traveling.

  • Tissue boxes can be re-purposed for storing plastic shopping bags, or to collect trash in your car.

  • Baby food jars are durable enough to use for separating nails, screws, washers, and other hardware.

  • Cereal boxes can be cut and decorated to hold magazines or other important papers.

If you're not the crafty type, choose the eco-friendly option and shop thrift stores or garage sales for gently-used containers. However, if you still cannot find what you need, then shop smart by looking for containers that have recycled content or opt for glass, bamboo, or cardboard over plastic.

And most importantly, always remember to measure the space before you purchase a new container so you buy the correct size you need.
